Configure Custom Objects

In Textey, you can follow these steps to configure a custom object for messaging.

  • Go to Setup > Create > Objects. Click SMS Message.

  • Click the New button in the Custom Fields & Relationships section.

  • Create a Lookup Relationship field that is related to your custom object. In this example, we are using a custom object named Student.

  • Complete the remainder of the new field wizard just as you would for any new Lookup field.

  • After the new Lookup field is created, you’ll need to create a Send SMS button that can be added to the page layouts of your custom object. Go to Setup > Create > Objects > Your Custom Object Name. In this example, our custom object is named Student.

  • Click the New Button or Link button in the Button, Links, and Actions section.

  • Enter the following on the New Button or Link page.

    • Label: Send SMS

    • Name: Send_SMS

    • Display Type: Detail Page Button

    • Behavior: Display in existing window with sidebar

    • Content Source: URL

    • Formula: /apex/simplesms__send?target={!Student__c.Id}

Note: The merge field at the end of  the URL needs to be the Id of the record. Your merge field name will be different from the one in our example. To find your merge field name, click the Insert Merge Field drop-down and choose Record Id.
  • Save your new Send SMS button.

  • At this point, you will need to add the Send SMS button and the SMS Messages related list to the  page layouts for your custom object.

  • Go to Setup > Create > Objects > Your Custom Object Name. Click Edit next to the page layout you want to configure.

  • Add the Send SMS button to the page layout. For this, all you need to do is drag the Send SMS button from the Buttons section into the Custom Buttons panel on the page.

  • Add the SMS Messages related list. For this, drag the SMS Messages related list onto the page layout. To further configure the SMS Messages related list, click the wrench symbol on the SMS Messages related list to open the related list properties page.

    • Add the following fields in this order:

      • Message Date

      • Direction

      • Message

      • Status

      • From Phone

      • To Phone

      • SMS Message Number

  • Sort the list by SMS Message Number in descending order. This will make the newest messages appear first in the related list.

  • Finally, click the plus (+) button in the Buttons section. Remove the New button from the related list. This simply prevents any confusion for users who may try to create a new record manually.

  • Click OK.

Click Save.
